Transformation starts with 1️⃣ weed
Hi friends!
Our little urban oasis was sorely neglected over the past few months. The weeds did what weeds do and took up every open space. They didn’t consider for a second that they were not part of my vision. I was overwhelmed by the scale of the mess. My first thought was, “It’s never going to be the same again.” (I’m prone to catastrophizing.)
My mother often refers to a quote she read from the oh-so-glamorous Ingrid Bergman who said she loved nothing more than deep cleaning her house with a girlfriend.
I don’t love cleaning and I don’t love yard work, but I do love deep heartfelt conversations and the satisfaction of progress.
So, to tackle this overwhelming mess I called my wise friend Kara. We talked and solved all of life’s problems. (I’m also prone to exaggeration.) And I picked every last one of those weeds.
So often we don’t know where to start. The scale of the challenge feels so big that it paralyzes us. And then it keeps getting bigger. And scarier. And bigger. And scarier. And we get more and more stuck.
But, here’s the thing our outcome obsessed culture forgets to tell us: we just have to start. Before you say to yourself, “I don’t know where to start” just take any tiny step, distract yourself with something (or someone) you love to make it more appealing, and then, celebrate the heck out of your progress!
Look at that first tiny weeded patch and know that if you keep picking, your mess is gonna be an accomplishment one day. (Though I’m sorry to say that if you neglect it, it’s just gonna get messier.)
So, if you’re feeling overwhelmed by that call you don’t want to make, that boundary you’re afraid to enforce, or whatever mess you want to manage, just pick the first darn weed and give me a call if you want someone to talk to as you do.
