How to Take Charge of Your Money in Midlife

Is it too late for me to...?

The answer is no. And The Uplifters will prove it.

This is a space for purpose-driven women who want to do big, brave things in the second half of their lives. I’m Aransas Savas, and I’ve spent 20 years at the intersection of behavior change research and coaching, helping people turn “someday” into “I did it.”

Listen to this episode if...

  • You have ever nodded along in a financial meeting without understanding a word.

  • You are building a business or a second act and are not earning what you hoped.

  • If you’ve ever said “my husband handles that” about your finances.

What if you trusted you to take care of you?

Women are told, in a hundred quiet ways, to leave money to someone else. Financial expert Mackey McNeill has spent more than 30 years proving that women need to take their seat at the table.

When Mackey opened her first firm in the 1980s, she was pregnant, the primary earner for her family, and determined to be a CPA in a place where there were few women even working at firms, much less running them. Within ten years, she was the only woman, and the only first-generation firm, on Cincinnati’s largest CPA list. Since then, she has bought and sold multiple companies, written two books, The Prosperity Playbook and The Intersection of Joy and Money, and now runs The Prosperity People and The CFO Collaborative, which teaches CPAs to use coaching skills with their clients.

In this conversation, you will learn how to take charge of your money in midlife, how to find a financial advisor who explains things in plain English, why selling more is rarely the fix for women entrepreneurs over 40, and why it is never too late to start where you are.

Her Courage Practice

Mackey has a question she asks herself after every single meeting with an advisor, and she wants every one of us to steal it. Did this meeting take care of me? Do I feel more empowered than I did before I walked in?

If the answer is no, keep looking.

I love this because it takes the pressure off the whole thing. You do not have to be brave about money. You do not have to understand everything. You only have to notice how you feel when you leave the room. Women know when they are not being taken care of, she says. The practice is simply to trust that signal, and then to treat the search for support like a fact-finding mission instead of a marriage proposal. You do not have to marry the first advisor you talk to.

When women take charge of our money, we stop handing over our agency to other people and start making a plan that gets us where we want to go.
