A Midlife Fitness Expert on Rebuilding Strength Without Starting Over

with Heike Yates

If you’ve ever wondered, “Is it too late for me to...?” the answer’s NO, and The Uplifters will prove it to you. This space is for purpose-driven women who want to do big, brave things in the second half of their lives. I’m your host, Aransas Savas, and I’ve spent the last 20 years at the intersection of behavior change research and coaching.

We’re closing out our 3-part series on Fulfillment this week.

Part 3:

Listen to this episode if...

  • You’re mourning an old version of your body.

  • You have tried and quit the same fitness or health goal more times than you want to admit.

  • You spend more time thinking about who you once were than who you want to become.

When things get hard, I stop trying to power through mentally and shift into support instead. I slow down, move my body, and remind myself that discomfort doesn’t mean I’m doing something wrong. I focus on the next doable step rather than solving everything at once. That approach keeps me from spiraling and helps me stay connected to myself.

Heike Yates is fierce and determined. She’s the kind of person who powers through and doesn’t take no for an answer, so when an arthritic knee threatened to end her running career, she tried everything to keep going. But nothing worked. Eventually, she had to stop running. With it, she lost her community, her routines, and a sense of herself. She spent a full year grieving these losses.

Now she is 65, turning her decades of fitness, nutrition, and mindset work into something gentler. Her book Pursue Your Spark and her SPARK Framework are for women who are stuck in the gap between who they were and who they want to become. Her mission is to get women out of the trap of wishful thinking and into motion, without guilt, extremes, or starting over.

Her courage practice: The 10-year Reset

Every decade, on her round birthdays, Heike asks what’s next. The rule is simple: don’t discard what you learned. Keep the building blocks, toss what no longer serves you, and decide what you want now. Mourn as long and as hard as you need to for what you’re leaving behind. But then celebrate where you’ve been and focus your energy on where you’re going.
