I’ve been thinking about the difference between Work and work.
🙋🏻♀️Writing to you is Work. Investing in meaningful relationships is Work. Caring for my body is Work. Challenging my mind is Work.
🙅🏻♀️ Doing what I’m told is work. Showing up for relationships, jobs, and even things that are “good for me” when they no longer bear fruit: work.
Both take effort and energy. But, only work is hard.
Unfortunately, most of us are conditioned to work hard and so we shape our lives to accommodate work and then mourn the loss of progress on our Work.
When I ask people what is non-negotiable in their schedules, most say “work”. And yet, when I ask them why they don’t do the things they long to do, they say “time.”
So how do we find time to do our Work, whether it’s writing a book, training for a big race, or nurturing our relationships?
Often, we do it by using the same systems we used to get ourselves to do work.
We make a commitment- to ourselves and ideally to others.
We carve out sacred time.
We minimize distractions.
We show up over and over until we make it a habit.
One of my favorite things we do at LiveUp is Flow-Working. We meet each Friday morning on Zoom, set ourselves up to Work, and dive in for two magical hours. We come out of this little cocoon with information, progress, and a deeper sense of commitment to our Work- because we are not just talking about doing Work- We are DOING Work.
A few questions that might be worth exploring this week:
✨What is your Work?
✨What would be possible for you if you spent more of your precious hours fully engaged in your Work?
✨What’s getting in the way of your Work?
✨What’s one tiny way you could experiment with engaging in your Work this week?
Let’s get to Work, sweet friends.
