As we reflect today on all who have sacrificed their lives in service of others, it feels like the perfect opportunity to consider how we can, like Chrisie Canny, from last week’s episode, find strength by giving strength.
We all know how amazing it feels to give to others and make a difference, but Chrisie and I noted that it can feel hard to know where to put our efforts, find places and ways to be helpful, and integrate giving into our lives regularly.
Chrisie has a gift for bringing Uplifters together, but, there are so many ways to give. Here are some steps you can take to find volunteer opportunities:
Identify your interests and skills: Think about what causes or issues are important to you and what skills you have that could be valuable in a volunteer role. Consider your passions, hobbies, or areas where you have expertise.
Research local organizations: Look for nonprofits, community centers, hospitals, schools, religious institutions, or other organizations in your community that align with your interests. You can search online, check local directories, or ask friends and neighbors for recommendations.
Contact volunteer centers: Many communities have volunteer centers or agencies that connect individuals with volunteer opportunities. They can provide information on various organizations and help match you with a suitable position based on your skills and preferences.
Attend community events: Keep an eye out for local events, fairs, or gatherings that focus on community service or nonprofit organizations. These events often provide an opportunity to meet representatives from different organizations and learn more about their volunteer needs - and connect with like-minded people.
Utilize online platforms: Several websites and platforms connect volunteers with organizations. Some popular ones include VolunteerMatch (www.volunteermatch.org), Idealist (www.idealist.org), and All for Good (www.allforgood.org). These platforms allow you to search for volunteer opportunities based on your location and interests.
Reach out to specific organizations: If there's a particular organization you're interested in, visit their website or reach out to them directly to inquire about volunteer opportunities. They may have specific needs or ongoing volunteer programs.
Consider skills-based volunteering: Besides traditional volunteer roles, you can also contribute your professional skills to help organizations. For example, if you're a web designer, you could help create a website for a nonprofit or offer pro bono consulting in your field of expertise.
Explore virtual volunteering: In addition to in-person opportunities, consider virtual volunteering options. Many organizations now offer remote volunteer roles that can be done online from anywhere. This allows you to contribute to causes globally or even in different parts of your country.
Start small and expand: If you're new to volunteering, consider starting with short-term or one-time opportunities. This allows you to get a feel for different causes and organizations before committing to a long-term role.
By dedicating your time and skills to a cause you care about, you can make a meaningful difference in your community and, like Chrisie, find new strength and connection.
