Leaning Into Easy August
I've nurtured the same sourdough starter for 7 years. When she came to me she’d already been alive for well over 100 years, so keeping her healthy and strong feels really important to me.
When I started making sourdough, I was pretty precious about the process, spending days lovingly tending to each week's loaf. The smell of warm bread, the taste, and the tomato sandwiches were enriching, but the work became too much. It was taking attention away from daily practices that mattered more to me. So I had to choose: Do I stop making bread weekly or do I let making bread fit with my life as it is right now?
So, now I take shortcuts. I add some commercial yeast and spend less time kneading and waiting, but we still enjoy our weekly bread just as much. Someday, I may go back to the old-fashioned way, but for now, this fits better.
When we find ourselves asking "Do I or don't I?" maybe it's time to ask ourselves "What really matters? And how might I do this differently to let what matters most work for my life now?"
In my head, I've been calling this "Easy August".
We all have things that we tolerate, things that sap our energy, things that are just hard.
How might you find a little ease for August?
