I’m a lucky woman to spend my days with Uplifters. One of my dear collaborators is the brilliant
, so as we continue our slide into September, I wanted to share a bit of her juicy wisdom with you today. A little about Alyse, for those who don’t know her: She has lived 66 years of power in motion. A lifelong learner, storyteller, instigator, and experimenter, who tracks opportunities for growth and perspective like the feistiest bloodhound. I’m convinced there’s no form of art or dance that she hasn’t mastered. But, Alyse is never content to rest on her perfectly pointed toes. Oh no. She’s taken up Pickleball. And here’s what she’s learning:I am learning to Fail intelligently because it’s fun and fruitful. ( I could leave the answer here— don’t read on if you understand this.) The odds of mixing things up are greatest when I am in a learning mode. Enjoying the process is the quickest and best way for me to grow.
I’ve been psyched out by aggressive Boomer dudes with something to prove.
One player hates to lose, and likes to attack. His fury at himself and others over any flub is palpable.
I did the opposite. I haven’t been competitive in ages. I play against myself, but what if I tried it now with new eyes?
I played athletically, with accuracy, and didn’t get worn out. I stretched, paused for water, counted to 10 before serving, and did what I needed within normal limits. I dissected quickly the shots I “failed” at and tried something different the next time. It was all unexpected. I walked away feeling like I bumped up. I’ve been training!
We don’t advance by doing the same old, same old.
So my motto this week has been to fail intelligently. Even if I only get 60 percent right I am actively learning. Inventors and fools do that. I just need a little more time and course corrections and watch out.
What would be possible if we all spent this month failing intelligently?
