What we want to do more of
Happy Fearless Friday, Friends!
In our Daily Practice Survey, we compared infrequent exercisers with frequent exercisers. The results were remarkable! Those who move regularly said that it was essential to their well-being. We found that the more regularly people move their bodies the more satisfied they are across all areas of their lives. They report better health and wellness, higher energy levels, higher engagement at work, more productivity, greater financial success, a significantly higher perception of personal freedom, and more satisfying personal relationships.
Roughly half of the people we surveyed exercise infrequently and about 20% don’t exercise at all most weeks. When we asked them to name the thing they could do more often to most improve their lives, they overwhelmingly said (probably while rolling their eyes), “Exercise”.
This isn’t a matter of us not seeing the value of exercise. It’s a matter of us fitting it into our lives in ways that we actually want to do it. Research shows that most of us skip out on exercise for three key reasons: we believe it’s boring, expensive or that we just don’t we have time. So, for today’s prompt, let’s dig into it and see how true these are for each of us.
Exercise Activity (is that a pun or am I just a dork? 😂)
1️⃣ Why: Which benefit(s) really matter to you? If you don’t care about the “why”, you’re super unlikely to do the “what”.
2️⃣ Blocks: You’re not skipping exercise because you’re lazy. You’re skipping it because of a very real mental or physical barrier. What actually gets in your way? (It’s ok if this turns into a full page list.) What if you viewed it through completely different lens? What do you see?
3️⃣ Pleasure: Identify a way to bring some pleasure to the practice, whether it’s a chance to be alone, or with friends, or to listen to music, or watch trash TV, or listen to a podcast, or simply breathe fresh-ish air.
4️⃣ Plan: Pick one super simple step you could take toward moving more tomorrow than you do today. One genius client who found that thinking about working out overwhelmed him and left him so exhausted that he melted into his couch, made his goal to simply touch the door of the gym.
5️⃣ Experiment! There’s a good chance that your first shot at this won’t be a magic bullet. Find out what you liked. Find out what didn’t work for you. Use that as a springboard for your next experiment and fine tune the plan!
Let me know what you find as you experiment. And please keep sharing the survey with your friends and family. Aransas
