The Awkward Award Goes To… 🏆
Happy Fearless Friday, Friends!
My 11 year old believes there are few greater horrors than feeling awkward.
Walk into a room where you don’t know anyone, or where you don’t know what to do? AWKWARD!
And yet, I believe, that awkward is a sign that we are growing through learning.
Our family has been crazy awkward this week.
I’ve been trying to get comfortable using the local gym, and to figure out how to manage a Squarespace site.
One daughter is learning to knit, another is trying out new recipes.
My mother single-handedly tore out a closet, on purpose.
My husband practiced ordering wine in Italian from an Italian server and spent a few hilarious minutes on the beach flailing to and fro trying to inflate his new Chillbo Shwaggins lounger.
None of it was smooth. Lots of it was laugh out loud funny. There were stumbles, burned bits, tears, raw vulnerability and sore parts, and so many resources and sources of support that made it all possible. (The Academy of Awkward would like to thank YouTube, Duolingo, and the friendly staff at Eastpointe Gym, especially.)
Through all of these, there were moments when we made the choice to keep going through the awkward to the satisfaction, not just because we’d get better/stronger/smarter/more confident, but because doing so just let us get a little more intimate and comfortable with awkward. So, today, here’s to celebrating the magnificent achievement of awkward!
Here’s to making friends with fearlessness,
