Don’t Look Too Close
Happy Fearless Friday, Friends!
Wikipedia taught me that Perspective Distortion in photography is a warping or transformation of an object and its surrounding area that differs significantly from what the object would look like with a normal focal length, due to the relative scale of nearby and distant features.
What views of ourselves have been completely distorted by zooming in too closely? What if those “flaws” that we can’t take our eyes off of are actually our superpowers? What would we see if we opened up the lens a little and took in the whole picture?
A couple years ago, before there was a pandemic, I spent a bunch of time considering these questions in relation to my curvy thighs. How could I chastise and criticize something that proved my genetic connection to my favorite people, something that saved my ancestors and carried me through marathons and the birth of babies and taught me the true power of my body and my mind?
This exploration impacted me so much that watching this video two years later is super uncomfortable, but since I’m constantly challenging us to do scary things, I am going to just hit send and see what happens when I open this lens even further.
Update 2.5 years later: I see my thighs differently. I’m not sure if they changed or my thoughts did, but I no longer zoom in. They go mostly unnoticed, just doing thigh things, until moments like these when I celebrate their total badassery.
Cheers to love and learning,
Aransas
