Learn Your Lines 〰
Happy Fearless Friday, Friends!
I wish I had paid more attention in graduate school, but I believe I walked away with the lesson I needed most. It came from Director who used to say “Learn your lines so you can forget them.” I have thought of this counsel (and shared it with others) more times than I can count. To me, he was telling us to practice our lines over and over and over again so that we could know them so deeply inside ourselves that even if the entire set fell down we’d know what story we were trying to tell. Even if we were slow to pick up our cues, even if our costumes fell to pieces, even if one of our fellow actors didn’t show up on stage, we wouldn’t have to think about our characters.
We could just be.
In life, we get to practice being who we want to be over and over and over again every single day. Sometimes it all comes together. We feel healthy and happy and strong and clear and it’s pretty easy to be our best selves. But, other times everything gets scattered. It is in the midst of those messy moments that learning our lines really pays off.
If you’re having one of those moments/days/weeks/years/decades when it feels like you can’t catch your breath without getting pulled back under, maybe this is a moment to find one teeny tiny line to repeat or one simple action to practice again and again to will help you remember who you really are.
Here’s to the practice,
Aransas
