Call don’t fall (AKA People who need people)
Happy Fearless Friday, Friends!
I have been getting a surround sound message from all sides lately that people need people.
We saw Funny Girl on Broadway last week. I fell in love with the story, a celebration of independence and brassy courage balanced by a truthful exploration of why it’s both so valuable and difficult to accept support from others.
Meanwhile, one of my wise friends is caring for her mother right now in a hospital in Indiana. Her mother has fallen a few times, so the staff posted signs in her room reminding her to “call don’t fall”. But, she, like so many women I know, hasn’t rehearsed asking for help too much in her life. Rather, she’s tuned her focus to ways she can help others and learned how to get along on her own strength.
Then, a man injured 23 of my neighbors in a terrifying attack this week. It left many of us feeling raw and vulnerable, and so often those moments send us inward and pull us away from support. It stands out to me that his neighbors all described him as “isolated.”
A dear friend said to me when we were still in our 20’s, “ Let’s practice becoming the old ladies we want to be.” So, today, I’m practicing being the old lady I want to be, the one who is stronger through the support of others, who calls before she falls.
Today’s loving reminder goes out to the strong ones, the ones who support their families and teams and businesses. Let’s remind ourselves that it’s ok to melt into a puddle, it’s ok to say, “Hey, I’m tired and could use some help getting from here to there”.
