Only read this if you aren’t a psychic 🔮
Happy Fearless Friday, Friends!
I have bad news for you: Most of us aren’t psychics (though the photo above is of me playing one many years ago). We can’t predict the future. There are so many unknowns that we can’t possibly control or anticipate. Unfortunately our control-hungry brains often forget this. We expect ourselves to be able to make decisions that take into account everything that might happen, all the ways we might change, and all the things that might go awry. When we do this, our decisions usually end up in a death spiral. We end up going back and forth and side to side and up and down and get so lost in the possibilities that we can’t make a decision.
One of the things my clients and I find incredibly helpful is to let go of trying to make “forever” decisions. Instead we focus on “for now” decisions. What’s right based on what you know right now? What’s best based on who you are right now?
The right answer doesn’t have to be right forever either. You can change your mind at any time. Seriously, you’re not a politician (most of you, anyway). You can change your mind. You can revise your stance. You can take the learning from your “for now” decision and move on. In fact, as Adam Grant says, “A sign of intellect is the ability to change your mind in the face of new facts.”
If you want to hear a little bit more about this, check out this Instagram Live that Kara Cutruzulla and I did last week. We had a blast talking about letting go of forever and leaning into the unknown. I hope you find a little freedom to make your own “for now” decision. It’ll be the right one.
Here's to doing our best with what we know now.
