What’s on your “To Don’t” list? ❎
Happy Fearless Friday!
My friend Alyse recently asked, “What’s on your To Don’t list?” I’m an over-the-top doer of lists, so that felt like a pretty radical question, especially as Thanksgiving seemed to kick off a tsunami of busy-ness that was plowing straight into the New Year. My list now looks something like this:
❎ Don’t take on the happiness of everyone around you. It’s not your responsibility. ❎ Don’t go to the party if you really don’t want to. ❎ Don’t stay up late unless you’re doing something that energizes you. ❎ Don’t eat the food just because you once enjoyed it. ❎ Don’t feel like you need to keep every tradition alive. ❎ Don’t do everything in the hardest way possible. ❎ Don’t worry about perfection (Exhibit A: our scraggly tree above)
That first one is the biggie for me. I have a tendency to take on everyone else’s needs and then counterproductively make things harder on the people around me when I slip into frustration from not being able to force everyone’s happiness. It’s not a cute look. And it’s definitely not helping me or the ones I love. So, this year, I’ve been practicing letting things slide and reminding myself that I’m not responsible for everyone or everything. And what do you know? I’m more relaxed and less snippy and I think we are all better off taking responsibility for our own stuff.
So, for this season, maybe take an honest look at the things you say yes to that don’t actually serve you and add them to your “To Don’t” list. I’d love to hear what you discover as you do.
Here’s to breathing our way forward, together.
