Start rebuilding with one hour ⏰
Happy Fearless Friday, Friends!
I often imagine our lives as a bunch of little blocks that have been assembled over decades into a set of structures. Some of the structures were thoughtfully built, curated and maintained. Many were just cobbled together in the heat of the moment to give us cover from the storm.
When we are in big moments of transition, it often seems like a blast of wind sweeps through and scatters all of those little blocks around. We get overwhelmed by the idea of rebuilding, so we kick the blocks and scatter them further until we find ourselves shivering in the cold without shelter. We get into survival mode and start cobbling new lives together just to make it through the storms. Then, we look around and wonder why everything is such a mess and nothing feels right.
It’s tempting to start by rebuilding whatever we had before, even if it no longer serves us. This is why I coach women in transition: mostly in or out of jobs or careers, or in or out of mothering (and sometimes several of these at once). For me, and so many women, these big transitions leave us with a feeling of losing ourselves. And it makes sense. We lose ourselves in the hustle of just trying to figure out how to survive when our most basic and fundamental structures have been blown out from under us, sometimes in an instant.
When we rebuild intentionally, we start at the foundation. We usually start with a single hour of the morning and we engineer the heck out of it to make sure it meets our needs. We make sure we understand the major variables that impact it (babies, partners, managers, sleep, hunger, etc), and factor those in. Then, we create some accountability structures (like a daily text with your coach 😉) to help with the ongoing practice of these new routines. Most importantly, though, we learn from the practice and constantly work toward getting clear on what works and doesn’t.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by change these days or like your inner light is hiding under some rusty old lean-to, try starting with one hour, or even one five minute chunk, of your day and owning the heck out of it by architecting it to work really hard for you. By doing so, you’ll create a solid foundation for everything else so you can live in the life of your dreams.
