Let's make it a great summer, together! ☀
Hi friends!
This past year has been rough in so many ways. So much loss, so much worry, so much change. And it's had a profound effect on how we think, feel and act. A recent report from the NIH indicates that our personal care and health behaviors changed as radically as our social behaviors in 2020. Many of us are smoking, drinking, stressing and eating more, and sleeping less. Many of us also found more time to invest in learning, growing, and connecting with those closest to us. Regardless of what's changed in our lives, we made it through and there's so much to celebrate in that.
But, what will we do with all that we learned in the past year now that the masks are coming off and we have more freedom to choose how we spend our time and with whom? Unfortunately, behavioral science tells us we're not likely to accidentally cut back on unhelpful habits we developed in 2020, or to sustain those more helpful ones. The only real way to do that is to intentionally design them into our new post-Lockdown lives.
The time to do that is now. Since the last day of kindergarten most of us have gotten a clear message that summer is a time to let loose. The prevailing wisdom is that the summer of 2021 will be the loosest and wildest summer of our lives. I keep picturing a flamboyant teenager, dressed in a giant feather boa and sparkly heels marching into a ballroom singing "I'm Coming Out" whenever I read these predictions. I can't wait for my own grand feather boa moments, but I also don't want to give up the extra family time I've gotten this year, so I've created a powerful technique for helping us intentionally design our own best summers. Mine is going to include a "right for me" balance of wild abandon and thoughtful downtime. Just saying that I want that balance doesn't actually increase the likelihood of me doing it, though. That's going to happen through spending a little time sketching out what I want more of and less of, specifically, so that I have a concrete plan for bringing it to life.
