I can’t believe it’s been 22 years since that fateful day when September 11 became embedded in our memories. My audition in downtown Manhattan for that morning had been canceled, so I slept in. I woke to my roommate’s voice telling me that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. We walked to the water and watched the smoke and ash fill the sky. We assumed it was an accident, of course. Somewhere across the city, the man I would one day meet and marry was producing the nonstop news coverage that would tell a different story.
Amidst all the loss and confusion of that time, there is one image that always stands out boldly in my mind. When I finally worked up the nerve to get back on the subway a few days (or maybe it was weeks) later, I accidentally bumped into another New Yorker with my bag. I was so shaken and unnerved that I felt a little panicked, as though this woman might lash out at me for my carelessness. But, she looked me deeply in the eyes and said, “It’s just a bump. There are so many worse things.” In this short exchange, this stranger helped to put my world back in perspective, and she made it feel that as New Yorkers, Americans, and humans, we might come through that difficult time more connected than ever before.
But, we’ve all seen what’s played out since. We’ve felt the increasing division and distance from people who look, talk, and believe differently. If I’m honest about why I really started The Uplifters, it is to care for and support Uplifters because I believe that we are the strongest possible bridge for these divided times.
I started this morning with a group of Uplifters over at LiveUpDaily, and in honor of the National Day of Service, we sent love notes to strangers. Whatever you have planned for today, I hope that this little love note to you, powerful Uplifters, can be a reminder to reach across aisles, extend a hand, and show some love on this day of remembrance and promise.
